A Tennessee Department of Correction's prisoner escaped custody Monday afternoon while working with an inmate crew at an Anderson County church. According to the TDOC, 31-year-old Brian Calvin Lee was gone for about an hour and a half before being captured in Knox County. Lee was one of several Morgan County Correctional Complex inmates working at the Frost Bottom Missionary Baptist Church. The crew had been painting and roofing at the church for about 10 weeks, according to Anderson County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Mark Lucas. The inmate allegedly stole a 2001 Kia Sportage belonging to the church's preacher, the Rev. Houston Carroll, and fled alone in the vehicle. Lucas said he and other deputies went to the scene and then put out an alert to other agencies. "Trooper Greg Roberts did some followup investigation and learned (Lee) had friends and acquaintances in South Knoxville," the chief deputy said. "We were doing the same." Lucas said Roberts saw Lee in the vehicle that had been reported stolen and engaged in a brief pursuit with him. However, when the Kia ran over a curb, Lee jumped out and ran away on foot before the trooper caught up with him. Roberts reportedly took Lee into custody on Trotter Avenue in Knoxville. Because the trooper had to "spray him," the escapee had to be taken to a medical facility for treatment before being returned to the Morgan County Correctional Complex near Wartburg. Dorinda Carter, public information officer for the TDOC, said Lee is serving an eight-year sentence for aggravated burglary, robbery and arson out of Knox County. He is being returned to the Morgan County Correctional Complex's maximum security unit. Carter said Lee appeared before the parole board in August and was denied parole until January 2011.
