After a 10-month inquest, the coroner investigating the murder of the late journalist, Abayomi Ogundeji, ruled yesterday, that the former member of the This Day editorial board died in the hands of armed robbers. Mukaila Fadeyi submitted his verdict in a magistrateвАЩs court in Yaba, Lagos saying that вАЬarmed robbers, as opposed to the police killed late Paul Abayomi Ogundeji.вАЭ Mr. Fadeyi stated that the evidence presented was not strong enough to suggest that the deceased was killed by policemen. He noted, however, that Mr. Ogundeji may not have died if the police had been more efficient. вАЬIf the police had been up to their constitutional duty of protecting the populace, he could have lived; if the right virtues have been indoctrinated severely into the conscience of those who carry weapons about either lawfully or illegally.вАЭ He noted that the cause of the death was attributed to multiple injuries and multiple gunshot injuries. In his findings, he stated that a visit to the scene of the incident and a close look at the вАЬbullet holes in the body of the KIA Sportage jeep the deceased was driving indicated that two sets of guns were used; a high calibre rifle and a pistol.вАЭ The magistrate also noted that the armoury of the police division at Shasha, close to the scene of the incident does not have the said ammunition. This, he said led the court to hold that the deceased was killed by armed robbers who were said to have operated on the same day using a pistol. Mr. Fadeyi also suggested that the police should have zonal homicide departments in a cosmopolitan state as big as Lagos. He noted that manning of check-points contrary to directives and the fact that the police did not conduct any investigation into the death of the deceased as alleged by them also contributed to the death of Mr. Ogundeji. вАЬThe police ,it had become, obviously never carried out their constitutional role of investigating the crime. Facts as earlier exposed by this coroner would suggest that all the investigating police officers at one point or the other were all in motion without seemly moving.вАЭ Mr. Fadeyi called on the Inspector General of police to order his men to renew the search to unravel the killers of Mr. Ogundeji. вАЬI call on the police, the IG particularly, to order his men to renew his search for the killers of Abayomi Ogundeji.вАЭ Jennifer Ogundeji, wife of the deceased, was present at the proceeding after she missed out on her opportunity to testify two weeks ago. Counsel to the Ogundeji family, Bamidele Ogundele told the court that the intermediary between himself and the family had misrepresented Mrs. OgundejiвАЩs intentions and that she was now ready to testify. Mrs. Ogundeji who came slightly late into the court, was reprimanded by Mr. Fadeyi, saying that his verdict was already prepared. вАЬI waited for you to have you give us an insight into his last days, also for you to explain the text message you wrote to him asking if he was coming home and if you should prepare his food.вАЭ Mrs. Ogundeji left the court-room five-minutes to the end of the proceeding and stated that there is nothing she can do about the verdict since she did not institute it in the first place. вАЬAll I can say is that there was no sufficient evidence but I thank God for everything. It was the NUJ that instituted it in the first place so there is nothing I can do, I leave everything in GodвАЩs hands,вАЭ she said. History Mr. Ogundeji was killed on August 17, 2008, at the Dopemu area of Lagos, and a coronerвАЩs inquest to unravel the circumstances surrounding his death began on Friday, January 23, 2008, at the insistence of the Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ). The union had through its counsel, Femi Falana, forwarded a petition dated August 22, 2008, to the Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Olasupo Shasore (SAN), claiming that Mr. Ogundeji was killed in a violent and suspicious manner. The Police, however, alleged that the deceased was killed in an armed robbery attack.
